Special Needs Collaboration Site
By Mike | April 9, 2008
Over the past few weeks I have been trying to develop an idea I have had. The idea is a social networking site/content management site for people with special needs and their families, friends etc..
This all started forming in my mind 3 years ago while I was sitting in the hospitol waiting on my daughter to recover from her heart surgury. She was 6 mos old then and we had no one other than our doctor to ask questions to. See she was born with Down Syndrome. It was a complete suprise and to be quite honest. We had no idea what that meant. We didnt know we should be insisting on a battery of tests for her. We didnt know it was OK to go to the doctor with her on a hunch (which is how we found the AV Canal Defect in her heart). If it werent for a very caring and friendly services coordinator and a friend of the family that happened to have had a daughter with Down Syndrome a year prior we would have known nothing at all. Sure, someone from the local Down Syndrome Association dropped off a packet for us to memorize the day she was born but, there were all these questions and there still are. I happen to have a 15 year old brother that has Cerebral Palsy and Autisim so this left me wondering if my daughter were similar to him or if my mother can clue me into the special needs my daughter might have. But, all told we had nowhere to go, no one to ask questions too, no idea what was in store for us. Read the rest of this entry »

Proxy servers. Can’t live with em, Can’t live without em!
By Mike | March 8, 2008
Been fighting this one for a while and thought i’d share…
Here was the situation. We have 2 public sites set up in Sharepoint with 2 Web Front End servers in the DMZ and one indexing server inside the network. One day last week the indexing server started failing to crawl the content on the WFE servers when it had been working just fine. Upon further inspction we noticed it was in fact working for 1 of the sites but, for the second site it was returning this:
sts3://sitename.domain.com
An unrecognized HTTP status was received. Check that the address can be accessed using Internet Explorer. (HttpStatusCode ProxyAuthenticationRequired The request failed with HTTP status 407: Proxy Authentication Required.)

..been too long
By Mike | December 6, 2007
Here I am again! I have all the normal excuses about life getting hectic with one additional one which is that I got a new job about 2 months ago. It was time to move on but, it really stunk that I felt that I needed to. So now im working as a Technical Specialist at ___ In the Web Technology and Archetecture group, which roughly makes me a IIS, SharePoint, Apache, WebSphere and Webbsphere Portal Admin. Needless to say for those that know me, I really miss Domino, Sametime, and AD. But I get the chance to add some SharePoint experence my belt. So far i have only worked on 1 massive undertaking of launching a new public website that uses MOSS for its content management and homegrown .asp apps for the rest. It has been neat to say the least as, it is (im told) one of the largest public facing sites done in MOSS.
Its good to be back. More to come…

Web2.0 at work?
By Mike | July 19, 2007
So now I’ve gone and done it… I went and had some ideas about how to apply some Web2.0 applications at work and now I have to explain myself. I have a meeting with a few of the “powers that be” at my office today to explore some of these ideas so I’m going to spin two scenarios. First, it’s worth mentioning that my environment is structured somewhat like a retail environment and our user base is not very reliant on technology to do their job. That said, they are using technology to find new and sometimes innovative ways to make money. That is, after all, why they are in business. One that has been working is outside sales. This is not a new concept but, its application in in our environment is. So here is scenario 1: Read the rest of this entry »

Now that im all set up and posting on WAMP I need to test joining my page.
By Mike | July 17, 2007
And it doesnt work. I can join but the site cant send mail. I have come to find out (by way of Google) that I need to configure sendmail. There is only 1 problem with that… sendmail doesnt exist on windows. The other option is to manually update the SMTP server in some obscure config file somewhere in the wordpress tree. The problem with that is that I dont want to run SMTP because I shouldn’t have to. (like my logic there?) so Google sent me to this, the ShiftThis SMTP Plugin. Read the rest of this entry »

Quick break from the “How To” to share something I saw on Alan Lepofsky’s site.
By Mike | June 28, 2007
Alan is on the money and so is the creator of this slide show, Steven Collins. Socal Networking isnt just MySpace any more and it has come a long way for the business. IBM is jumping in early and making a strong showing with Connections (which I have been playing with and have nothing but good things to say about it) I mean with all of the “new blood” entering the business world today who know and love this social networking as I did my cell phone and email and as my father did his CB and landline. How can we expect to exist in it with them if we don’t embrace these new colloborative and extensive networks of our peers. ..and who knows maybe we can capitalize on some unknown skill that we never knew our organization had that we found in ___’s profile on the corporate Social Networking site…
Im sure I will be back on this soapbox soon enough but, for now ill let you be.

Finally, WAMP… The Post.
By Mike | June 28, 2007
As promised (better late than never) Ill shed light on WAMP and how to get it up and running with WordPress. This is a great and very easy method of getting up and running fairly quickly with WordPress. Id say 1 night is all it takes. So, first of all, what is WAMP? WAMP is like LAMP only on Windown rather than Linux. What? You want more than that? OK Wamp is:
Windows - Apache - MySQL - PHP
OK Mike, that is all well and good but, what are those things?
Good question Read the rest of this entry »
